During the week of March 25-29, AmericanAirlines Arena, home of the Miami HEAT, hosted “Camp Hoop Heroes” (CHH) a free week-long, intensive youth leadership and mentoring program, which responds to the need for more mentors willing to work with local youth. After a successful run in New York City and Washington DC, the program expanded to Miami. CHH leverages the game of basketball to provide participants with caring mentors and exposure to different educational and career paths. During the camp, volunteers mentor participants one-on-one and educate them about high school, college and career opportunities.

Forty youth participants and 40 college educated volunteer mentors participated in nightly basketball drills, tournament games, classroom and leadership activities. CHH participants learned the following leadership skills: discipline, fairness, respect, leadership, selflessness, resilience, vision, and responsibility. During their one-on-ones, mentors explained the opportunities available to students in high school, college and beyond.

Guest speakers during the camp included Michael McCullough, Miami HEAT EVP/CMO, Jose Mas, CEO of MasTec, Inc, Maverick Carter, CEO of LRMR, LeBron James Business Partner and Marketing Consultant and Gaby Schoepflin, Director of Distribution for FOX Television.
